The most famous duel in the history of mathematics, if not all of science, took place on 30 May 1832. It ended with Evariste Galois, a French mathematician, being shot in the abdomen. He died the very next day at the age of 20. But, by then, he had already done enough to initiate an entire field of mathematics, now termed the Galois Theory, apart from making a substantial contribution to a number of related areas. Supposedly, because of his love of mathematics, he spent the night before the duel annotating the theory that eventually was named for him.

1839 in military time is 6:39, which is interesting because 639 is a fun set of threes. 1 and 8 add to 9, which means 1839 is a fun set of threes as well. If this is meaningless to you, Franz Schubert's Symphony no. 9 in C was premiered in 1839 by Felix Mendelssohn more than a decade after Schubert's death. This widely regarded and presently studied work would likely have been lost to time if it wasn't for this performance.
