Retract free guess - cricket is entertainment
As previously hinted at, the cricket buff in me nearly picked Imran Khan for this round.

Free clue: don't read too much into that sentence; this person has no apparent connection to cricket.

Mahathir Mohamad (Malaysia)?

He's alive, he was born before 1950, he isn't a socialist, and during his second term as Prime Minister he set the record for the world's oldest ever Prime Minister.

Malaysian, Thai, Iranian, Afghan, Lebanese, Yemeni, Tajik or Kirghiz?
Yes!

I had promised another clue at this point, but my clues were going to hint towards the country he was from; I think that you're doing great now that you're down to a list of 8 countries.
For other players, this list may seem long but I think that Malaysian is by far the most likely nationality of this man.

We have a winner! Mahathir is the correct answer. He finally lost his parliament seat last year at the age of 97. During his first term as PM, he was involved in fighting against a communist insurgency.

Well done!

A good challenge, thank you.

Outside of Asia or the Pacific, I am not sure if he would pass the "dart test", but I think that's ok because he was a clear enough target that he could be narrowed down by research.

(To put it another way, I spend far too much time online researching answers to this damn game when I have two actual academic papers I should be writing, and a full-time job, lololol).

Next game coming up soon!

I did wonder how many people would have heard of him going into this round, but he felt like he would be at least as important/well-known as a couple of the other recent world political figures (see Mottley and Tereshkova), especially when he gets to be the world's oldest democratically-elected head of government. Anyways, part of playing or following this game, for me at least, is learning about fascinating people I haven't heard of (I started following these threads around the Abram Petrovich Gannibal round).

Once I found him on Wikipedia I realised I had seen his picture in various news items. Therfore I had sort of heard of him.

Like you, I enjoy learning about new things, and this game does give us that opportunity!
