Turning 50

#1 Post by Smokey Gem » Thu May 09, 2019 2:23 pm

The older you get the younger you realize old people are.

Discuss.

Not really; when I was 10 I'd genuinely think my grandparents' friends young, lol...

it made for some amusing situations, a kid being surprised and saying "Oh! You're so young" to people five/six times his age.

It hasn't changed since then haha

I feel old. My knees creak, my back cracks, I've found some grays, and I've got scars/burns on my arms. I'm also 25. When can I start feeling young again?

Nah, 50 is old whatever way you look at it. Not "very" old, I grant you, but old nonetheless. The sort of age where if you died of a heart attack or some such illness people would be surprised, but not necessarily shocked.

Congratulations :)

But...but...it's only 50 years being alive! 50 is young! Maybe not youthful, sure, but still young.

when I was 12 I used to think 21yr olds were mega elderly, as I grew up, I became more 'tolerant' and understanding of how age works

Over halfway through the journey by any measure, and old enough that an accurate number of birthday candles would have a significant carbon footprint. Well past childbearing age if he was a woman, which by several scientific definitions would no longer qualify as being alive. Fading away, but not yet expired. One foot in the grave would be an exaggeration... but maybe a toe? A dip of the elbow to test the temperature, perhaps?

Fun fact. If you're 50 every single dog alive when you were born is dead, as are all of their puppies, and all of their puppy's puppies.

At work, as a way to disarm tensions I would refer to people as "young George" or "young Mary" etc. irrespective of their age. It always seemed to raise a smile...

Ah Smokey... 50 is life's prime. Other than the physical effects of age, the emotional effects of age, and the spiritual effects of age.
BUT these days, you're probably just at the half-way point! Unless you eat the wrong foods, drink anything but water, sit in a desk for more than twenty minutes each day, watch tv, vote in elections, spend time with people, or live in any part of the world that is above the surface of the earth, where meteors might crash into you. Other than THOSE things, you can expect 50 more years.

But seriously, congratulations... I rememver 50. The good ole days.

Here soon, they will have the technology to keep your head alive in a jar. Futurama is nonfiction.

I think the appropriate response to this is "Nice speech, kid. NOW GET OFF MY LAWN!"

I dunno, my brother ran his first triathlon when he was 53. He was one of only two people to finish after me, but finish we did (I was 45 at the time). I am certainly not above fair to average health, but 50 is certainly not the end. My grandmother had 51 years left when she hit 50 and my grandfather still had 38 years ahead of him. He slipped on ice while out for a walk and hit his head,so I am not sure how much longer he would have lasted. He'd go swimming with us at the lake well into his seventies.

The Swedish side of the family was very proud of their longevity. Telling stories about my great grandfather who fell out of a hayloft at 92.

oh and..

Get a colonoscopy (and skin cancer check). I had stage zero cancer last year and had to have surgery to clear it up. The colonoscopy very likely saved my life.

WOW such underwhelming things to look forward too..

I still think "Old enough to know better but young enough not to give a fug".

when they put the camera up they will see beer and chips heading their way.

I sit at the computer more than 20 minutes a day playing dip.
I have no living blood relative over the age of 68.
I watch TV Got mainly.
Not only do I live in a meteor zone but Skylab fell not far from here.
We have a federal election this weekend and voting is compulsory.
I am looking forward to verbally abusing younger folk and not caring because I forgot what I said..
Now excise me I got to take a poo sample and send it off for bowel cancer screening..a free service in the lovely land of Aus. ( no shit ) pun intended.

When I started to school, 3rd classes were bullying us and I was thinking " Oh 3rd class is super old you can do whatever you want" probably because I remember I was jealous of them. Ps. They were 10 years old. :/

Well I have meet 20 year olds that behave and think like they were in their 50s; And I have met 60 year olds that behave and appear to think like they were in their 20s.

Age seems to be relative. Don't take it too seriously!
