Make Way For Winged Eros - Alexandra Kollontai : Pretty interesting, Kollontai wrote it as an address to “the young workers” in early 20’s Russia, just as the civil war was wrapping up and people were starting to be able to think about things beyond immediate survival. It looks at how love and marriage have changed throughout history (with a focus on the feudal and bourgeois eras), and sets out a view of how love and family life could change under socialism.

Also reading Meditations by Marcus Aurelius, a bit at a time. I’ve been listening to the history of Rome podcast and it got me interested in the man.

This week I finished The Color of Law and Invisible Planets. I think I'll start The Raven Tower soon.

I just looked up target Raven Tower. Sounds like my cup of tea. Did you end up reading it? If so, how was it?

I really enjoyed Raven Tower. The central conceit is really cool, and she develops it well.

In any case, last week I finished All the Things You Never Told Me, and now I'm on The Calculating Stars, which just somehow beat The Poppy War for a Nebula.

Rereading de Sade's 120 Days of Sodom, and the Abnormal Psychology textbook by Rosenburg & Kosslyn, although it's a bit outdated, since it's the newest version I could find for free haha.

I'm still mad that it beat The Poppy War, but it's actually really good. I need to get my hands on the next book.

Gormenghast is still waiting patiently on the shelf while I read Jack Campbell's JAG In Space series. Bloody good fun! He's described by Rambles as "The best writer of legalistic military science fiction writing today", and I know literally no-one who can argue otherwise.

I just re-read George Orwell's 1984 and Aldous Huxley's Brave New World.

The parallels to today are chilling. We are definitely under the watch of the thought police. Our 'news' sources are busy at work brainwashing us.

You re-read Brave New World? Good Lord, why? Once is more than enough for any man.

Can someone give me a recommendation for the summer? Would like a book that you would classify as your favourite. I'm in the mood for something somewhat contemporary (not entirely necessary) that showcases another culture pretty well (so like, no dystopian pls). No idea what to read though

A Suitable Boy

1984 & Brave New World are classics and disturbingly relevant.

It's not literature, but I have today laid out $Aus 75- to purchase a music CD of the album "Monkey Puzzle" by Australian band The Saints (recorded in Europe). As I am hopeless with most internet thingy stuff, the purchase is being handled by a local music/vinyl records/CD/DVD shop. I picked up the four movie DVD set (new) of four early "Carry On" movies, Carry On Sergeant, Carry On Teacher, Carry On Nurse & Carry On Constable, that they had sourced for me.

I don't have time to read now

I started to read The Discourses by Epictetos . weird, that's the first time I read a philosophical book. I did like it and wished I could argue with Epictetos at some points.

I am catching up with back issues of The Economist.
