The Bliss of Solitude

#1 Post by Octavious » Sun Mar 15, 2020 5:25 pm

With the exciting prospect of self isolation for a fortnight or so looming on many people's calenders, it is high time we gathered together a list of entertainments to pass the time (as you can only do your favourite pass time so often before going blind. Yes, amateur astronomy can put great strain on your eyes). Left to their own devices some of our members may, in a fit of desperation, end up learning a language or (heaven forbid) reading Swordsman's blog. It is our duty to save them from this fate.

So without further ado let's start off with this little radio gem.

As the pubs shut their doors in the UK, time for another suggestion from the glory days of British television

Jeeves and Wooster at its very best. All there on YouTube with just a little searching. Enjoy!

Hey, swordsman's blog is cool! (other then that part where I mess up as Italy in the ODC game)

It's certainly an impressive piece of writing, but new players reading it is filling the site with lots of mini Swordsmans.

In the meantime, here's a nice little distraction from a decade ago to take our minds off current events :)

Here's a fun one for fans of American wrestling. For those who are uninitiated, American wrestling is the modern day successor of the old music hall slapstick comedy, with routines drawing inspiration from silent film heroes such as Chaplin, Buster Keaton, and Laurel & Hardy.

All past WrestleMania shows and other big events including Royal Rumble, SummerSlam and Survivor Series, as well as recent episodes of WWE's weekly TV shows, Raw and SmackDown are free to watch on the WWE network :D.

Let's get ready to rumble!

Aside from B. Tuchman's address to the War College, dip fans may want to ponder Russell F. Weigley. THE AGE OF BATTLES: The quest for Decisive Warfare from Breitenfeld to Waterloo (Bloomington and Indianapolis: Indiana U.P., 1991).
Modern warfare, according to Weigley, begins with Gustavus Adolphus of Sweden, thence to Maurice of the House of Oranje and Nassau, and on up to Bonaparte.
For all I know, the Weigley book's maps may have been adapted for variants of our game by Manhattan's Strategy and Tactics store denizens in more salubrious times.
For those seeking to expound further on that era's battles academically or otherwise, Weigley offers French Revolutionary dates as well as (Old Style) Julian and Gregorian, e.g.: 21 Pluviose An IX, for clashes and retreats.

Every weekend a full length musical will be free to view on YouTube.

This weekend is Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Enjoy!

So one of the best discoveries of the Corona era has been the Radio Garden app. Does anyone else use this? Absolutely awesome! :-D
