I did great in practice... but it was 'luck,' often. I got slaughtered in the real game.
Which is EXACTLY how robots are going to take over the world.

Yeah, if I vote draw now, by my calculation you drop to 21st, I'd be 20th and xorxes is 19th (assuming my most recent Ghostrating from 2012 counts). Either way we drop out of the top 20 when other people finish their games because Kcelec is well on course for a second solo.

OTOH, I've figured out some weaknesses in England's stalemate line play to go for the solo, but my game crashed and I've been told I have to just vote draw. :o

Oh crap, the GR counts. Yeah I'm done :(
Oh well (was kinda hoping that I'd just sneak in on a multi-tie scenario but guess I should actually read the rules instead of assuming stuff :P )

(then again, TECHNICALLY it didn't say whether the tiebreaker benefited the HIGH or the LOW gr... :P )

A few of you have learned that the bots do not enter orders past 1950. You won’t be able to continue past that point.

Is there a reason for the cutoff?

Yeah, playing bot games in perpetuity would knock off the Pacifist Game, which is obviously a real high quality Diplomacy game, as the longest running game.

You will be asked for your username and your three favorite countries to play. You will be able to play these three countries in the first round of the tournament.
For the second round, will we be playing the same three powers as in the first round, or will we choose three powers out of the four we did not play in the first round? Or will everyone simply play Austria three times? I am preparing for the latter...

Obviously I didn't do so well to make to the second round, I did enjoy the games though. It was my first time in a gunboat and learned a lot from these games.
The only thing I am not understanding is the draw policy, after some years as things were mediocre to bad I voted a draw vote, then I had 5 SCs and armies. No draw. The game came to that when I was left with one SC and a fleet, one unable to defend this SC!

The bots have a different drawing mechanism. The bot with the largest number of SCs will vote to Draw if it hasn't gained any centres in 4 turns. The others will always be ready to vote Draw (until they become board leader).

So if you keep getting eliminated as Russia, instead just vote to Draw in 1901!

Round 1 is complete! Scoring will happen over the course of the next few days. Please be patient with me as life is quite busy right now, but I will be doing my best.

Due to a slight structural change in the tournament bracket, there will be 22 players moving on to round 2. Final scores from round 1 will be posted tomorrow and invites to begin round 2 will be given out as well.

A bracket?! I’m a big fan of brackets...

Very curious to find out what the “new” bracket looks like, and how it was changed/improved from the initial bracket, especially since I assumed the second round was the final round and simply involved everyone playing three games again...

If two or more people tie, clearly the person with the worst GR has over-performed the most and thus has had the more impressive performance relative to theoretical skill level and should be rewarded accordingly by advancing ahead of the higher rated people that have under-performed relative to ability

Round 1 Scores

Those above the cutoff will be sent an invite to play round 2 within 24 hours.

Here is the tournament scoring system as a reminder:

a.) At the start of each game, you will begin with 140 points.
b.) If the game draws, you will lose 20 points for each bot remaining in the game. For example, for a 3WD you will earn 100 points. For a 6WD, you will earn 40 points.
c.) If the game ends in a bot solo, you will lose all of your points for that game.
d.) If you are defeated, you will lose all of your points for that game.
e.) If you beat the bots, you will keep the 140 points you began with and earn a 60 point solo bonus, totaling 200 points.

Congratulations to those advancing to round 2!

22 players are advancing out of round 1 with a low cutoff score of 360. Each player advancing won at least one game, with the top 3 scorers soloing all three of their games.

Round 2 is going to work a little bit differently. Each of you chose 3 countries that you would prefer to play. In round 2, you will be randomly given three out of the four countries you did not choose to play. Your scores from this round will determine the winner of the tournament, and at the end of the tournament, you will be awarded the amount of points that you win in these three games.

For those not advancing to round 2, thank you for playing! I encourage you to continue playing against the AI but also to remember that we host games against people too. Bot tournaments will, in all likelihood, happen again in the future again for you to play.

Round 2 invites will be sent out shortly!
