09 Aug 20 UTC Autumn, 1902: Alright I underestimated you there. Very good.
09 Aug 20 UTC Spring, 1903: Thanks. I try not to disappoint.
10 Aug 20 UTC Autumn, 1903: Well, that was frustrating.
11 Aug 20 UTC Autumn, 1903: Ah damn I’m getting my ass kicked now
11 Aug 20 UTC Autumn, 1903: Getting all those guesses right might be game or close to it
11 Aug 20 UTC This could be it.
11 Aug 20 UTC I’m pretty sure even getting a draw here would be a miracle for me
11 Aug 20 UTC Yeah wrong guess for me. I needed to move to TYR from PIE.
11 Aug 20 UTC Yup. That was the one guess left here.

I took my time considering between the two, but it was simply less intuitive to have Tyrolia as the mover there (0 chance of three builds for me) that I figured you'd expect me to try to move from Tri.
11 Aug 20 UTC Don't need the extra build though.
11 Aug 20 UTC Trying to judge if I should just concede
11 Aug 20 UTC I won't mind either way. Not unheard of to blunder here.
11 Aug 20 UTC That’s a very clever read, and the right analysis. I wonder how I would fare against you over iterated matches.
11 Aug 20 UTC I had a massive psychological edge in the early turns. I knew I would be underestimated. The first couple years, all I did was consider what moves France would make against a beginner Austria, and then input the correct counters. There wasn't much sophistication to it.

No way I'd get away with that in a rematch.
11 Aug 20 UTC That speaks well of your ability and poorly of mine. I could have reviewed your previous games to get a better estimate of your ability, but I just assumed you were a beginner. I shouldn't have let you get away with it in the first place.

I love the card game Yomi, by Sirlin Games. It's not that different from 1v1 Diplomacy, in terms of the skills tested. Back when I played it a lot, I encountered a top player saying "Yomi is a good game. 2-out-of-3 Yomi is a great game. 3-out-of-5 Yomi is the greatest game."

I think that player had that belief because of how an extended round of matches lets players take a longer, more strategic view of how they play. (E.g., making a tactical sacrifice to mislead the opponent about how one thinks, hoping for a big payoff in later matches.)

I'm not implying that I would do better if we played again. I am genuinely curious about how great your ability is at this time. I'm not a top FvA player.
11 Aug 20 UTC I'm no xorxes, and my inexperience (I think I've played maybe 10 games of FvA?) means that I do very poorly in live matches, as my record shows.

But I have a decent grasp of lines and positioning, and probably spend far too much time thinking of moves. I do currently hold the championship belt for FvA (yay!), after a pretty lucky game on France.

Would love to play again in a while - I'm in multiple FvAs at the moment, including one defending my belt.
11 Aug 20 UTC Ah, it's definitely more than that. A lot of them games that I seem to have erased from my memory. Roadhog destroys me every time.
11 Aug 20 UTC Markus has been kind enough to coach me - I wouldn't know heads or tails about the variant if it wasn't for him.
