17 Apr 18 UTC Autumn, 2003: You know, I always thought about that one quote, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." The implied meaning is obvious, when things get hard people will be spurred into motion. Many examples of this theory have been scene through history with protesting and also through their own need to survive. This quote was said to originate from the U.S. from Joseph F. Kennedy, the father of John F. Kennedy. It is also featured in a song by Billy Ocean, which was used in a movie called "The Jewel Of The Nile". This quote is used to motivate people who are in challenging circumstances. Since the quote is not aimed at a certain event, it can be used by people for a number of different situations. Now, if we were to delve deep into the meaning we pick up a number of different ways of understanding this quote. However that's 'Philosophy Club's'(tm) job, and I don't feel like doing that. Instead I will be talking about the intricate history behind the quote and how its meaning still has relevance in our daily lives.

The history of this quote dates back to Joseph Kennedy, as I've stated earlier. He was a generally wealthy man, running a bank at 25 and becoming a millionaire at 30. It isn't known when he had said the quote. He had quit his job as the British ambassador for the U.S. because he was upset by their decision to not stop Hitler's spread. With this fact, we can assume that he had stated the quote to support his beliefs about the incoming war (This is as much theory as there will ever be in this report). His family had problems with their legacy, mainly because of the war that started. The oldest daughter's husband was killed in Normandy during the German's invasion of France, she was killed in a plane crash. The oldest son ,Joe, had been killed during the war as well. The legacy fell upon John, who became president and ran for some time until his assassination. It was clearly obvious that he had led a 'tough; life, however he still trudged on and died in his late eighties. The man definitely lived up to his own quote. So now you might be wondering why I am writing this disgustingly long report about this quote. Basically, to those who are thinking about backing out of the game because they're in a bad position or have missed some phases, GET TOUGH and GET GOING.
