17 Jun 14 UTC | Spring, 1901: For anyone wondering about the name, it's a reference to JB Priestley's "An Inslector Calls". It's set in 1912 and Mr Birling, a rich businessman, is explaining to his children that "War? War is impossible. No one wants war, except a few half civilised folk in the Balkans." I rather liked it. In the same speech, he glorifies capitalism using examples like "The Titanic, due to sail next week, absolutely unsinkable" and informing the audience that they "shouldn't worry, we've seen the worst of this labour agitation". |
